HERO, 2016

IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME

HERO is SkinCatering’s sore muscle cream originally created in 2013 for Roller Derby teams that has since turned into a cult phenomenon sweeping the nation! From high school field hockey teams to sponsored athletes, to cancer survivors on tamoxifen to retirees at the senior center, people just can’t get enough!

It’s a product for those of us getting older, trying to pull off the same moves we had in high school, and ending up saying, “It seemed like a good idea at the time,” as we lay on the couch with pillows tucked under our knees, back, and ankles.

During the testing phase, back in the day, we practically had to beg people to try it (yes, I saw your skeptical looks, my friends!) and now it’s the highly sought after “Go-To” cream for all over body relief.  HERO is sold online and in our spa, as well as in five Big Y World Class Market stores in Western Massachusetts.

After being featured at the Boston Marathon Expo in 2015, HERO was flown home in suitcases to places like Brazil, Portugal, and France.  Sponsored runners packed HERO with them when they traveled to competitions in Tokyo, Australia, and New York. Orders for dozens of jars at a time are being placed & shipped to teams in California, Wisconsin, and New Jersey.

While calls are coming in from Colorado & Virginia for post-surgery get well gifts, our favorite HERO story comes from our local senior population. We literally have elderly customers mailing us personal checks with handwritten notes requesting 3 jars at a time because they are pushing it on their health aides & physical therapists who are doing home visits. (And yes, Betty & Margaret are requesting a commission on these “sales” they are making on our behalf!)

So what makes HERO so great?

HERO is a whipped, melt-to-your-skin cream that seeps deep into the muscles and joints to ease aches & pains without leaving a greasy residue. It uses the therapeutic properties of seven different essential oils that are specific to inflammation, pain, bruising, and connective tissue problems.

What makes this product different than other commercial-use products out there (that shall remain nameless) is that we don’t use menthol to induce a freezing cold state to reduce/block pain.  We use specific oils that give a mild hot/cold sensation that almost goes unnoticed by the user. This allows the body to continue the healing process while pain and swelling are reduced to a more manageable level.

Active Ingredients Theory:

MARJORAM – reduces inflammation & pain from sore muscles, cramps, spasms, arthritis, and headaches

ROSEMARY – relieves pain from sprains & joint aches, stimulates circulation, reduces stress, reduces inflammation

FRANKINCENSE – warming, anti-inflammatory, relaxing

VETIVER – cooling, reduces inflammation in circulatory & nervous system

CLOVE BUD – gentle cooling sensation that eases inflammation & tension to provide relief from painful swelling and headaches.

4 Ways To Go Bare – Down There

There is a gorgeous new work dress hanging in my closet that really showcases my fresh Autumn hair color and gives life to my paling skin tone who’s desperately missing summer.

I was thinking as I drove into work about how I’d like to wear my green dress (but not a real green dress, that’s cruel) to an event Thursday evening but winced as I debated bare legs vs. pantyhose at this time of year – which made me smirk at realizing just how First World Problem that is.

“If this is my biggest dilemma today, it’s going to be a good day.”

BB Pink Purse polka dot shoes
Bare Legs won over circulatory-system-suppressing hose/tights/leg prisons that shred the instant I take them out of the package.

This time of year it can be tricky to have nude skin showing, and not just because of potentially (usually) chilly weather here in New England.  Flaky skin, prickly hairs, paler tone, and dull dry legs…those are the obstacles being presented by the beauty team neurons that run this part of my brain.

I consulted with Kim, our Aesthetics Expert, about how to best combat these issues and here’s what we came up with!

The Business Girl’s Guide To Bare Legs

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

  • Use colorful scrubby gloves or mitts found at just about any store in a variety of price ranges & materials, and can be washed multiple times for re-use.
  • Try our “Bikini Bottom” body scrub for ingrown hairs – it’s great all over the body for a micro-scrub that uses pumice (crushed lava rock)
  • Make a DIY sugar or salt scrub at home. Use coffee grounds for a more gentle buffing, and use sea salt for skin conditions like psoriasis.

2. Wax on!

  • Waxing typically lasts longer than shaving so the 5 o’clock shadow won’t be peeking out around your pumps at your 6 pm networking event. Best done the day before an event so if you have any redness from the treatment, your skin has time to return to it’s normal shade of naked. Hair grows at different rates on different parts of the body, so keep an eye on all your waxing needs!

3. Watch me whip, watch me Spray Spray!

Being a supporter of the Melanoma Foundation of New England, we are always looking for UV tanning alternatives.

  • Use a lotion containing “DHA” (a derivative from sugar cane or beets) to gradually tan the skin with each daily application. There are several different options at your local drugstore to choose from!
  • Kahuna Bay Bronze Sunless Tanning Spray is a “tan in a can” that you apply yourself to targeted areas. (For best results, do on Sunday nights to have tan legs all week.)
  • Get a spray tan from a local professional. This is your best option for full body, even coverage. (Follow the 24-48 hour rule – do the tan 24-48 hours before the event for best results!)

4. Slather it on!

  • A hand & body lotion like our “Cashmere” is quick & easy to apply. It has a soft finish and doesn’t leave you greasy.
  • Natural Oils like grapeseed, coconut, or sunflower oil are nourishing to dry, sensitive skin and can give a nice shine to your legs. Grapeseed sinks in quickly with a dry finish, coconut oil spreads well but will sit on top longer so be prepared to blot with a towel if you need to get dressed quickly, and sunflower is helpful for psoriasis. Bonus – they can all be found in your local grocery store in the cooking aisle – top shelf!
  • Body butter is a thicker, heavier moisturizing cream. It’s great for feet, knees, and elbows all year long, and excellent for long-lasting softness. Try “Valley Girl” for a fluffy, whipped body butter alternative!

Enjoy being bare this winter, if you dare!

Launch of Men’s SkinCare Line

On Tuesday, September 16th at SkinCatering Spa in Tower Square, We had our ‘Scotch on the Rocks‘ themed party  to launch our Men’s line of skincare. This party is the sequel to our “Cater To Your Entrepreneurial Spirit” party we held earlier this year to help raise funds to build our line of products.
We honored the intention we set in February and it feels wonderful to show successful results just 7 months after the crowd-funding event!

Springfield, Massachusetts has a nickname called “The City Of Firsts” because of its numerous innovations (read more about them here.)

SkinCatering is proud to add to this list by offering what may be the first 4 Handed Couples Massage on the East Coast, if not the entire USA (though more research is needed to discover the truth of that last part.)

Four Handed Hawaiian Wave Massage

This ultimate, luxurious treatment feels like a celebration of your senses. Two therapists massage you at the same time, using techniques that simulate waves flowing across the body, helping you completely get out of your head, forget all your worries, and seriously relax!

Now imagine both of you receiving this amazing massage at the same time!

You Can Dress Her Up But…

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the exclusive Grand Opening of the stunning bridal salon, IN WHITE located in Agawam, MA this past  Tuesday night.  The Lancaster, PA company purchased the locally-owned Bancroft Bridal last month, renovated and renamed the business to match its sister store.

This night was a little bittersweet for me because Bancroft Bridal is where I said yes to the dress, 15 years ago.

An extra special perk at the party was that I got to re-introduce myself to the woman who helped me find my gown!  Kristin was in her first year of bridal consultancy back then, and here she is, years of management under her veil now – and will continue as the Manager of In White.

It’s really fabulous to see someone who understands great customer service and wants all her clients to have a phenomenal experience at her shop, still shining and loving what she does!

The epic pictures of me of the event were taken by award-winning Seth Kaye Photography (who was recently named one of the Top 50 Photographers in the USA!)

Here I am captured with my partner in crime for the evening, Tanya Costigan of Bowties & Butterflies Event Planning

I FOUND THE GOWN! This dress jacked my boobs up so much I could practically motorboat myself. The dress itself was stunning!

EDIT: I should add a picture of my real gown that I wore 15 years ago with my handsome groom:

What we love about it: It’s a delicate perfume that doesn’t attract those nasty little gnats – it actually repels them away! Perfect for humid New England nights. The scent is a perfect balance to make it wearable for both men & women.

We will soon receive our order and it will retail at $30 for this beautiful glass spritzer that fits in your gorgeous evening bag.

As always, a little goes a long way!

Administrative Professionals Get Rewarded In An Amazing Way

The leaders in one of the tower offices of Monarch Place downtown Springfield rewarded their hard-working staff for Administrative Professionals Day a little bit early this year.  They booked the Elite Spa Squad over here at SkinCatering to come give their team an afternoon of mini manicures and mini massages! What a great idea!

“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.”

Benefits of Massage for the Bride-To-Be

Engaged!

How exciting to plan a celebration of the joining of two soul mates, right? I remember planning my own wedding in 1999 amid all the hoopla of the upcoming new millennium; talk about hectic! The excitement from the beginning can give way to stress as the date looms closer. All those little details can have you seriously considering elopement to Vegas! The saving grace during my own wedding planning was a gift from my mom – she sent me for a massage that had such a calming effect on me, I nearly floated down the aisle the day of my wedding.

While there’s a long list of benefits from receiving a professional massage, here’s a few that the busy bride-to-be may want to consider:

– Massage increases happiness. During wedding planning, feelings of sadness may arise if a loved one is not going to be at the celebration. Massage can help your natural feel-good hormones, serotonin & dopamine, increase which helps change a negative attitude into a positive one before you walk your gorgeous self down the aisle.

– Massage increases wellness. Elevated cortisol levels inhibit immune system function, leading to illness and [gasp] dreaded weight gain. Two things a busy bride just shouldn’t have to worry about before her big day are having a runny nose and not being able to zip the dress!

– Massage increases memory. The hippocampus is the region of the brain related to memory forming, organizing & storing them, and retrieving those memories when needed. Massage helps create faster and more elaborate development of this region to give you superior memory performance. Brides-to-be may find this helpful to recall details during planning, while grooms may wish for the opposite – especially after his bachelor party!

– Massage increases rest. Delta brainwave activity is linked to deep sleep. When your mind won’t turn off long enough to get a good night’s rest it effects your decision making & function. And take it from me, an experienced bridesmaid with a closet full of dresses: No bride should be deciding our dresses without enough sleep! (“And you’ll be able to wear this dress again, isn‘t that great?!”)

At SkinCatering we’ve made it even easier for brides to fit a massage into their busy schedule because we specialize in busy people!  Our hours are 8am to 8pm Monday thru Friday, 9am to 1pm on Saturday, and by appointment Saturday afternoon/evening & Sunday morning.  We even have a mobile massage option!

Have a whole bridal party that needs to decompress? We offer massage parties that give each guest mini-massage sessions at mini-prices, and the bride gets hers free with at least 5 participating guests.
